‘Are you a rascal’: CJP Nisar chews GB minister out for manhandling airport official

ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mian Saqib Nisar censured the Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Minister Fida Hussain for shoving an Islamabad airport official around over a mere flight delay.

During the hearing of the case on Friday, Hussain appeared before a three-judge Supreme Court bench where he was directed by the top judge to submit a written apology for his conduct.

The chief justice had taken notice of alleged misbehaviour on Nov 16 after Hussain was caught shoving an official at Islamabad International Airport and burning his own luggage in protest against a delay in his flight.

Justice Nisar, who is heading the bench also summoned Islamabad police chief Amir Zulfiqar Khan so that a case could be registered against Hussain.

The top judge also admonished the Inspector General of Police (IGP), asking him why he hadn’t appeared in court since he was transferred to the post on Nov 2.

“Leave your pride and arrogance at home when you arrive here, this is a court,” the top judge observed.

CJP Nisar then informed the police chief that misconduct had taken place at the airport and asked him what action had been taken.

Upon this, IGP Khan told the chief justice that the incident falls under the jurisdiction of Punjab police to which Justice Nisar asked, “Where is the attorney general Punjab?”

The CJP said that the court would hear the issue as a suo motu case directing the attorney general Punjab to look into the matter.

Prior to the IGP’s arrival in court, the CJP scolded Hussain and ordered the video of the incident to be played in the courtroom.

“Did you push the airport official?” the judge questioned the minister before wondering whether he was educated?

The minister admitted that he had pushed the airport official.

“Were you in your senses at the time?” CJP Nisar asked, inquiring how Hussain had dared to interfere with official affairs.

Admitting that he had pushed the official, Hussain contended that it was not due to ill intentions as there is a story behind it.

“Is this how one behaves when a flight is delayed?” Justice Ijazul Ahsan asked the minister.

The CJP went a mile more and asked the minister: “Are you a rascal? Do you have no shame over pushing the airport official?”

Mian Saqib Nisar remarked that a poor man had been mocked.

Upon this, Hussain responded that he was ashamed of his actions and asked the court to forgive him.

However, the chief justice said the minister would not be granted forgiveness and that a case would be registered against him immediately.

The video shows the furious woman accompanied by a fellow beating up a young man with scores of bystanders trying to cool down the situation.

After the video stumped the internet, the duo received massive appreciation for their valiance and firm attitude in teaching harassers and cat-callers, a lesson.

The date of when the video was filmed remains unknown, however, the ineffectiveness of lawmakers in tackling the matter in a well-defined manner is well evident.

SC seeks details of Aleema Khan’s UAE property, tax amnesty

ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court has directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to present property and tax amnesty details of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Aleema Khan.

Hearing a suo motu case on foreign properties owned by Pakistani nationals on Friday, a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took up the matter pertaining to the PM’s sister owing property in Dubai while FBR adopted an ambiguous attitude.

When the chief justice asked the FBR chairman Jehanzeb Khan whether Aleema Khan owns any property in the United Arab Emirates,  he replied that there was no official confirmation regarding this as yet.

“If Aleema Khan declared the property in her amnesty scheme then the matter is confidential. If the court orders, we will present a record of the amnesty scheme,” the FBR chairman added.

Justice Nisar then inquired whether Aleema Khan declared any foreign property in her amnesty scheme as the matter is being highlighted for days now.

Upon this, a member of the land revenue board said that Aleema Khan owns a property abroad.

Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that to claim the amnesty scheme, foreign properties need to be declared.

“Why are you not telling us this when the chief justice is asking you,” Justice Ijazul Ahsan observed.

To this, the member of the land revenue board responded that he was talking about confidential details.

Justice Nisar then turned to the member of the land revenue board and inquired, “Is Aleema Khan’s property in your name or is it your property? Why do you keep bringing up that it is confidential?”

The chief justice then ordered the officials to provide the bench with sealed details of Aleema Khan’s property.

Clarifying that the bench will review the details, the apex court also sought details of Aleema Khan’s tax records.

Further, Justice Nisar told FBR and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials that the bench sought results in the case on foreign properties owned by Pakistani citizens.

“You sent notices to all of Pakistan and there is no focus on the properties the court had asked for,” the top judge observed.

The apex court is hearing the suo motu case on foreign bank accounts and assets owned by Pakistani citizens.

China donates Rs6m more to families of martyred Sindh policemen for consulate defence

ISLAMABAD – China has donated an additional Rs6 million for the families of two policemen who embraced martyrdom while battling militants during an attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi last week.

China’s Consul General in Karachi, Wang Yu distributed Rs3 million each among the relatives of the deceased assistant sub-inspector Ashraf Dawood and constable Amir Khan at a ceremony held at Central Police Office.

The ceremony was attended by Sindh Inspector General Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam, Karachi Additional Inspector General Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh, other senior officers and relatives.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chinese diplomat lavished praise on the policemen for having laid their lives in the line of the duty.

“China had already donated Rs6 million among the heirs of the policemen, bringing the total amount donated thus far to Rs12 million,” he highlighted.

Two suspected accomplices of Chinese consulate attack arrested

Yu added that people were still collecting donation through a campaign in China in a bid to appreciate the services of the Sindh police.

Sindh police chief expressed gratitude for the gesture and gave special recognition to the services of the martyred policemen, branding them as “assets of Sindh police”.

In the terror attack foiled by security services on November 23rd, two civilians, a father and son, named Zahir Shah and Abdul Karim, were also killed whereas a private security guard was left injured by the attackers.

Three armed terrorists were shot dead by police in a well-timed response; Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) had claimed the responsibility for the attack.

The terrorist group has been involved in several activities to hinder the implementation of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects, a mega economic deal between two countries.

India has also been jealous of the economic deal between Islamabad and Beijing. Few years ago, security forces had arrested an Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav involved in anti-Pakistan activities.

Jadhav, who was awarded death sentence by a military court, has confessed to providing funds to the BLA.
