LHC to hear bail plea of Maryam Nawaz today

LAHORE – A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Monday, adjourning the hearing of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Vice President Maryam Nawaz’s bail petition in Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case till October 29, sought arguments from the parties.

The division bench comprising Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem heard the post-arrest bail petition of the PML-N leader, wherein Additional Prosecutor General Jehanzaib Bharwana represented the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Advocates Azam Nazir Tarar and Amjad Pervaiz appeared on behalf of the petitioner.

During the proceedings, the bench asked whether Maryam Nawaz had been allowed to meet her ailing father, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, in hospital.

To which, petitioner’s counsel submitted that she was living with his father in hospital. He further stated that the bureau obtained physical remand of his client for three times but now she was on judicial remand.

In response to a query, NAB’s prosecutor submitted parawise comments to the bail plea on behalf of the bureau.

At this, the bench asked petitioner’s counsel Azam Nazir Tarar whether he needed time for preparation, adding that if he was ready then the bench would hear the arguments today.

However, the counsel stated that he would advance his arguments after preparation on Tuesday (OcT 29), while pleading with bench to adjourn the matter.

Subsequently, the bench adjourned matter till October 29 and sought arguments from parties.

The bench initially fixed the petition for October 30 but made it short to October 28 while hearing a civil miscellaneous application of Maryam Nawaz for her release on humanitarian grounds to look after his father in hospital, on October 25.

The NAB accused Maryam Nawaz of committing money laundering through investments of huge amounts being main shareholder of the CSM.

Maryam Nawaz through her bail plea complained about being subjected to double jeopardy, saying, a JIT made in Panama papers had already investigated the same matter and decided to not file any reference. She also questioned jurisdiction of the NAB’s chairman for approving the impugned inquiry under the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2010.

India’s hegemonic pretences and aggressive actions threat to regional peace: Maleeha Lodhi

NEW YORK – Pakistan has warned at the United Nations (UN), that India’s “hegemonic pretences and aggressive actions” present threat to regional peace and security.

Speaking in the UN General Assembly’s First Committee, dealing with disarmament and international security issues, Pakistan’s outgoing Permanent Representative to UN Dr Maleeha Lodhi said India’s conduct pose threat to Pakistan.

She said India’s “belligerent” military posture was demonstrated in February this year in the wake of the Pulwama incident in occupied Kashmir, it resorted to aggression against Pakistan on a completely false pretence, the Radio Pakistan reported.

Maleeha Lodhi said the recent unilateral action by India to further consolidate its illegal occupation of the internationally-recognized disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in flagrant violation of multiple Security Council resolutions, has further engendered the volatility in South Asia.

Kate Middleton channels Princess Diana’s style for Pakistan tour

ISLAMABAD – Kate Middleton’s latest look appeared to channel her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Middleton, 37, and Prince William arrived in Pakistan on Monday (yesterday) for a five-day tour, with Middleton wearing a light blue dress with matching pants. The outfit is seemingly inspired by the traditional shalwar kameez. Middleton’s dress also bears a close resemblance to a dress Diana wore during a trip to Pakistan in 1996 with a similar light blue colour.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s dress included a sheer neckpiece similar to the scarf worn by Diana. In addition, Middleton’s dress was designed by a frequent collaborator of Diana’s — Catherine Walker.

UK based editor and creator Susan Kelley told daily publication ‘People’ that she predicted Middleton will wear at least one more traditional look for the trip but notes that even though Middleton “has on occasion looked to Diana for inspiration” she is “careful not to copy her.”

Prince William, Kate Middleton arrive in Pakistan on 5-day tour

The royal visit to Pakistan came after 2006 when Prince Charles and Duchess of Cornwall Camilla Parker visited the country. In 1997, Queen Elizabeth visited Pakistan to attend the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the country wherein she had also addressed the joint parliamentary session.

According to an official statement, the “Duke and Duchess’s programme will pay respect to the historical relationship between Britain and Pakistan, it will largely focus on showcasing Pakistan as it is today – a dynamic, aspirational and forward-looking nation”.

Ushna Shah reacts to “pizza guy” Twitter fiasco

KARACHI – Pakistani star Ushna Shah after being massively trolled on social media following her tweet about her ‘sexist’ and ‘demeaning’ comments to a pizza delivery guy, has now come to her defense.

In order to clear the confusion, the Cheekh actor wrote an extensive note on Twitter:

“I’ve never been good at masking truths and pretending to be something I’m not,” she said adding that “I do not condone using the “be a man” card. It was something I was not proud of that I resorted to at a desperate time.”

“The fact that it is the only thing that worked made me want to discuss it publicly and create conversation about masculinity and patriarchy (why else would I tweet it, look at my track record of discussing gender roles and generally the public stances I’ve taken for women, LGBTQ and the breakdown of stereotypical gender roles),” she added.

Explaining the entire episode further, she said: “Once I said, “be a man” after many exasperated attempts to make him trust that I was strong enough to hold the dog. It worked. Yes, it’s sexist. A desperate measure I used at a desperate time. Instinctively and desperately I resorted to the approach knowing it would work on a Pakistani man.”

“Nobody is above it. Nobody is particularly proud of it either (I hope). . Life here in these woke times is a series of hit and miss. Many times I have seen almost everybody I know use examples to explain things to their help or the masses that normally wouldn’t be considered with the times, but sometimes that is the only way to convey a point, yet so many casting virtual stones over a tweet here (see what I did there).

“The idea of the tweet was to show that in this unfortunate world the only thing that could convince a boy to trust a girl holding back a dog (and yes his issue was that I was holding the dog, not the boy servant who normally does) was to use the masculinity trigger.

“On a closing note: I should like to tell the twitter court as well as my followers one thing: I have not often used twitter but if and when I do, my tweets will not just be a series of self-promotions.

“So my dear warriors of the twitter world, if what I tweet is not comprehensive to you and offends you, please, I beseech you, unfollow. And if you care to understand the CONTEXT before spewing out your e-rage, follow away,” she concluded.

It all started when Ushna tweeted that she passed ‘demeaning’ and ‘sexist’ comments to a pizza delivery guy at 2:30 a.m.

According to the actress, she told the man that “mard banein” (be a man), “aap ek chaar saal ki bachi nahee hai”, (you are not a four-year-old girl) and “mardaangi peida karein” (try to be manly). The delivery guy, she wrote, was scared of her growling pitbull dog.
