Woman killed, 9 injured as India violates ceasefire at LoC

MUZAFFARABAD – Indian troops on Monday fired across the Line of Control (LoC) in the region of Azad Kashmir, killing a woman and wounding nine people.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), in a statement, said the Indian forces deliberately targeted civilian population in Shahkot sector. “Resultantly, a woman (identified as Aasia) was martyred and nine others including two women and three children sustained injuries,” it added.

Pakistani troops returned fire after India’s cease-fire violation and targeted Indian army post that initiated fire on civil population.

Residents in the border town of Aathmuqam are fleeing to safer places, according to local authorities.

In 2018, the Indian forces have carried out more than 330 ceasefire violations along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary, resulting in the deaths of 35 civilians, while injuring 135 others. Apart from them, another 146 — 77 men and 69 women — have sustained injuries.

Last month, 22-year-old Munazza Bibi was killed by an Indian sniper in her home at Lawana Khetar village in Bhimbar Sector. She was mother of a two-year-old child.

The bullet pierced her head and she died on the spot, according to police officials.

Pakistan protests Kashmiri woman’s death by Indian sniper’s fire at LoC

This unprecedented escalation in ceasefire violations by India is continuing from the year 2017 when the Indian forces committed more than 1,970 ceasefire violations.

Though India and Pakistan signed a historic truce agreement in 2003, for more than two years the LoC and the Working Boundary have constantly witnessed ceasefire violations.

In May, the directors general military operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan agreed to undertake measures for improving the situation and bringing about peace for the populace living along the LoC and the Working Boundary.

They also agreed to implement the 2003 ceasefire understanding in letter and spirit.

Indian atrocities in Occupied Jammu and Kashmir

On the other side of the LoC, Indian troops have martyred 95,234 innocent Kashmirs including 7,120 in custody from 1998 to November 2018 in the indigenous freedom struggle.

During this period, the Indian occupying forces arrested 145,342 Kashmiris, destroyed 109,183 structures, made 22,894 women widowed, 107,751 children orphaned and raped about 11,107 women, according to All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) spokesperson Abdul Hameed.

Giving details of the Indian atrocities in in the held-Kashmir during 2018, he said that a total of 355 people including a 10-year-old boy, a pregnant woman and three PhD scholars lost their lives to Indian state terrorism in Kashmir in 2018 while 95 cordon and search operations took place in Kashmir in the year in which 120 houses were destroyed.

Two-mentally challenged men and a 14-year-old were also among the victims of Indian state terrorism.

The year 2018 will also be remembered for sheer brutality witnessed by an eight-year-old Muslim girl from Jammu, Aasifa, in the form of rape and murder in January, this year.

Rape, murder of 8-year-old Muslim girl spark communal tensions in Kashmir

The girl hailing from Rasana area of Kathua who had gone grazing horses on January 10 2018 went missing. After searching for her vainly, her father lodged a complaint with the police. However, her body was found on January 17.

The charge-sheet presented by the Crime Branch of Kashmir Police in court was one of the most disturbing reads of the year. It stated that the mastermind, Sanjhi Ram, instigated his juvenile nephew and six others to kidnap, rape and murder her in a bid to “drive out the nomadic Muslim community of Bakerwals from Hiranagar area”.

Senate Body approves ECL (Amendment) Bill 2018

ISLAMABAD – Senate Standing Committee on Interior on Monday unanimously approved Exit Control List (ECL) (Amendment) Bill 2018 and observed that insertion of names in ECL should be made under the law not as per personal wish.

Chairing a meeting, Senator Rehman Malik asked Ministry of Interior to submit details about the policy of inserting names in ECL and said: “Pick and choose would not be allowed in ECL.”

The meeting was attended by Senators Haji Momin Afridi and Mian Muhammad Ateeq Shaikh, officials from
Ministry of Interior, Capital Development Authority (CDA), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) police and others.

Former Chairman Senate, Senator Raza Rabbani, who was specially invited, presented the bill in the committee which discussed the matter in detail.

“A comprehensive report on ECL should be submitted and committee be informed about names of those who were recommended by National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other organizations,” the chairman said.

Rehman Malik said ECL law should not be misused while basic rights of people should not be ignored.
The meeting also appreciated efforts of Senator Raza Rabbani regarding Exit Control List (ECL) (Amendment) Bill 2018.

The committee condemned Indian state terrorism and observed that during the tenure of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi state terrorism in Occupied Kashmir has increased.

The committee prayed for martyred of Kashmir and former Member of National Assembly (MNA), Syed Ali Raza Abidi who was recently murdered in Karachi.

Rehman Malik while expressing grief and sorrow over the brutal killing of Ali Raza Abidi asked the Sindh government to investigate the motives behind the murder, immediately arrest the murderers and provide justice to the bereaved family.

He asked the Sindh government to complete the investigation and present a report to the committee as early as possible.

The committee was also briefed by Capital Development Authority on the construction of a bridge at Fazaiya stop to facilitate pedestrians.

CDA officials informed the committee that construction of the bridge has already been completed.

Rehman Malik said CDA should keep in mind rights of motorcycle riders and pedestrians while constructing roads and interchanges.

“It is our duty to look after the rights of poor people. Their rights should not be ignored while constructing roads and interchanges,” Rehman Malik said.

The committee recommended ending running of shuttle service in Diplomatic Enclave. Senator Mian Ateeq said people visiting the area are insulted through this service.

He said now the security situation has improved and people should be allowed to enter Diplomatic Enclave hassle-free. Rehman Malik condemned and took notice of the killing of three-year-old girl Faryal in Havelian and sought a comprehensive report on the matter from the government and police of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The murderers of Faryal should be arrested as early as possible, he asserted. The chairman also took notice of continuous reduction in value of rupees and demanded a report from FIA.

He said FIA should investigate all stakeholders under the Foreign Exchange Act and ascertain the facts regarding sudden and continuous devaluation of the rupee.

Rehman Malik also made public the letters he wrote to Ministry of Interior, Governor State Bank of Pakistan and the FIA on the matter.

“We do not want to make politics on national issues rather we like to help the government,” Rehman Malik said.

KP sees major drop in polio cases during 2018 as compared to last year

LAHORE – As many as 745 polio cases were reported in the year 2018 registering a significant decrease as compared to the last year due to great efforts of the present government according to the Director Extended Programme for Immunization (EPI) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Dr Ikram Shah.

Talking to a private news channel, he said solid measures have been taken to uproot this killing disease from society. This year single digit was reported in overall polio cases with 99 per cent reduction in polio cases which is a good omen.”Pakistan is closest ever to its goal of polio eradication,” he added.

He explained Pakistan is one of three remaining polio-endemic countries in the world, along with Afghanistan and Nigeria, however, there has been a massive decline in polio cases in the country since the launch of Pakistan’s Polio Eradication Programme in 1994.

Despite this remarkable progress in 2018, 344 cases have been reported from Tribal areas,117 from Balochistan; 52 from the Punjab, 100 from the Sindh were reported.

He further urged the media to utilize their forum for creating awareness among the people about vaccination to save their children from the crippling disease.

EPI director said the credit for a remarkable reduction in polio cases went to the vaccination teams who had been striving to protect the children from deadly disease.

He said the federal and provincial governments are utilizing all resources to eliminate the disease from the country. He appreciated the role of media in countering negative propaganda against polio immunization campaigns.

The present government is committed to ending polio and doing all their resources to make it possible and provide a polio-free environment to the next generation, he added.

“Any child with low immunity will be where the virus will find refuge. We need to ensure all our children have received all of their routine immunizations and are vaccinated, with two drops, every time the vaccine is offered,” he mentioned.

“Parents who do not ensure vaccination of their children are risking health and lives of their own children as well as others around them. It is thus the responsibility of communities to help to identify and to vaccinate such children,” he urged.

“We are closest ever to the goal of polio eradication. But to achieve it, we must all come together as a nation to ensure that every child is vaccinated. This is the only way we can collectively ensure that we rid polio from our land,” he remarked.

Government support at every level and cooperation of communities and parents has been imperative in Pakistan’s recent successes actualizing a case decline from last year.

He also urged the religious scholars to play their role to nullify the misconceptions about the polio vaccine.
