Gunman kills at least 12 co-workers at government building in US state of Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH – At least 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at a government building in the US state of Virginia.

According to Police, a gunman fired indiscriminately at the building who was later killed by police.

According to media details, the mass shooting incident occurred on Friday afternoon, when the assailant, public utility employee, indiscriminately opened fire upon co-workers at city offices in Virginia Beach, Virginia, leaving at least 12 people dead.

The gunman was later gun downed after being engaged in a “long-term gun battle” with law enforcement officers as police confronted him inside the building.

The city police chief informed that one police officer was wounded in the shootout, but his bullet-proof vest saved his life.

The police chief said that the suspect was armed with a .45-caliber handgun equipped with a “sound suppressor” device and was reloading his weapon with extended ammunition magazines as he moved through the building.

US President Donald Trump has been informed on the deadly shooting in the southeastern US city of Virginia Beach and was monitoring the situation, the White House has said.

Virginia governor Ralph Northam said he was monitoring the situation, too. The official called the shooting “unspeakable, senseless violence.”

R Kelly charged with 11 new accounts of sexual assault

Chicago- Embattled R&B singer R. Kelly has been charged with additional, more serious criminal counts involving one of the four victims whom prosecutors contend he sexually abused years ago, according to court records and Kelly’s attorney.

The charges include four counts of aggravated criminal sex assault, three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the ages of 13 and 16, two counts of criminal sex assault by force and two counts of aggravated criminal sex abuse, according to court records.

R. Kelly “was NOT charged with a new case. He was recharged in an existing case, same alleged victim and time (a decade ago) It changes nothing,” the performer’s attorney, Steve Greenberg, wrote on Twitter.

“These are the same conduct, just charged differently, same alleged victim, same time frame, same facts. We expect the same results,” he wrote.

Kelly has denied abuse allegations for decades. In 2008, the singer was charged on child pornography but was not found guilty.

Kelly, 52, pleaded not guilty in February to charges that he sexually assaulted three teenage girls and a fourth woman. The charges were brought after seven women including his ex-wife, appeared on a Lifetime television documentary and accused him of emotional and sexual abuse.

He spent a weekend in jail on the sex charges before being released on $100,000 bail on Feb. 25.

If Kelly is convicted, the new charges carry a sentence of 30 years, the Sun Times reported.

Salman Khan’s ‘Bharat’ taken to court over film’s title

DELHI- What’s a mega release without its share of controversies? A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking change of the title of Salman Khan’s upcoming movie Bharat.

Salman Khan’s character in his film is called Bharat but there is a legal dispute over the usage of the name, reported Hindustan Times.

The PIL demands change of the title, claiming the film is “distorting the culture and political image of our great country Bharat.”

The plea was filed on Thursday by activist Vipin Tyagi who said that the title was in violation of Section 3 of Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act which prohibits the use of names “Bharat” for any commercial or professional purposes.

Not only this, Tyagi has also appealed for a change in the dialogue where the character has been compared to the country, saying that it hurts “patriotic sentiments.”

Tyagi said, “This film is fraught with Salman’s typical flippancy and vulgarity. Being a ‘Bharatiya’, I feel it is not appropriate to name such film or any character associated with this film after our great nation.”

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Bharat houses a star-studded cast including Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Tabu, Nora Fatehi, Disha Patani, Sunil Grover and Jackie Shroff.

The film is to be released on June 5.

14th Islamic Summit: Makkah declaration underlines importance of Palestinian cause as central issue of the Islamic nation

MAKKAH – The 14th Summit of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which started in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, earlier today underlined the importance of the Palestinian cause as the central issue of the Islamic nation.

This came in the Makkah Al Mukarramah Declaration, issued by the leaders of the OIC Member States following their meeting today under the chairmanship of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

In his speech, during the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation summit in Mecca, Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud said that the kingdom would refuse measures that touch the historical and legal position of East Jerusalem.

The declaration denounced terrorism, extremism and fanaticism in all their forms and manifestation, whatever their causes and motives.

The OIC Member States denounced the terrorist attacks against Saudi Arabia and UAE, namely the recent strikes on the Saudi oil pumping stations and the acts of sabotage on commercial vessels in the UAE’s territorial waters, calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities toward preserving peace and security in the region.

It underlined the need to work earnestly “in order to counter the political, economic and cultural challenges facing OIC member States.”

The declaration underscored the necessity of working toward “preserving security and stability and opening venues of investment and sustainable development, with the aim of realising dignified life and prosperity for Muslim societies.”

Accountability court tells NAB to expedite filing reference against Khawaja Bros

LAHORE – An accountability court in Lahore directed the National Accountability Bureau to file the reference against Khawaja Saad Rafique and Khawaja Salman Rafique soon.

During the hearing of a case related to Paragon Housing Society on Thursday, NAB’s investigating officer informed the court that the reference against the Khawaja brothers had been approved by the bureau’s chairman and copies would be presented before the judge soon.

Meanwhile, Khawaja Salman Rafique appeared before the court in Lahore while Khawaja Saad Rafique was absent. When asked about Saad’s absence, the court was told that the lawmaker was in Islamabad to attend the National Assembly session.

The counsel for Khawaja brothers posed trust in the bench and said the housing society was established during the Musharraf era; the court extended the judicial remand of the Khawaja brothers till June 13.

Saad Rafique and his brother Salman Rafique were arrested by the NAB on December 11 last year in Paragon Housing Scam. According to NAB, Saad Rafique colluded with his wife, brother, Qaiser Amin Butt and Nadeem Zia to form the said society; Khawaja Bros deny the charge.

Khawaja Saad Rafique had branded NAB as a “black law that had been utilized to victimise political opponents since its inception”.

“Even the accountability during the PML-N government was not transparent,” Rafique had conceded during his NA speech in December last year.

Customers need not worry about their Huawei devices

There has been a lot of speculations and news regarding Huawei and the US Government over the past couple of days. Much like any other hot topic, it comes with a fair amount of assumptions, misinformation and miscommunication. Huawei has risen to being the second largest smartphone maker in the world which is also the spot it enjoys in Pakistan currently.

For the convenience of everyone, after intensive research, we have collected statements available to the public online and put together a quick guide on some of the concerns, questions and misconceptions customers have regarding their Huawei devices.

Your Huawei device will not stop working

There has been a lot of confusion amongst owners of Huawei phones that their phones will stop working however that is simply not true. Your phone will continue to operate just like it normally does like any other phone. It will also continue to be serviced by Huawei. In a public statement, the company mentioned:

“Huawei will continue to provide security updates and after-sales services to all existing Huawei and Honor smartphone and tablet products, covering those that have been sold and that are still in stock globally.”

Your phone will receive its usual updates

The good news is that all phones that have been released by Huawei, be it purchased or in store will continue to receive security updates for Android and regular Google app updates from the Google Play Store. Here is Google’s statement:

“We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications. For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,” a spokesperson told us.

So there you have it. As Google’s official statement suggests, Huawei’s current devices will have complete access to the Play Store and get security updates from Android.

Huawei is one of the biggest Android partners and a gigantic company

When you purchase a Huawei product, you must know you are buying from one of the largest Android partners with the most innovative technology. Huawei promises to continue providing support for all its devices for the whole lifetime of that phone.

It’s also worth noticing Huawei stops at nothing with plans for launching new phones. The Honor 20 was recently launched globally while a new Y series phone from Huawei is also all set for a release soon. This means that Huawei is confident in its products and willing to support the end-user whatever the outcome of the current issue at hand be.

Tecno Pakistan sets example by joining noble cause led by Khubaib Foundation to deliver quality education to orphans

KARACHI – Smartphone giant Tecno which is the official partner of the Manchester City football team just initiated its biggest CSR project in Pakistan titled “Tecno Blue Chalk”.  The mobile company has joined hands with Khubaib Foundation, a local children’s welfare organization to help deliver quality education to orphans.

The event marking Tecno’s collaboration with Khubaib was held at the foundation’s college and hostel for orphans in the hill-city of Haripur, Pakistan.

Creek Ma, the CEO of Tecno mobile Pakistan toured the orphanage with Nadeem Ahmad Khan, the chairman of Khubaib Foundation. The two walked through the campus and talked about ways to improve the infrastructure and to expand on the resources available for the orphanage. Both invoked their primary desire of improving the quality of education available so that the children have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Tecno’s support to Khubaib Foundation involves not only a monetary donation through the MOU but a year long commitment of further funding through donation boxes that will be set up at Tecno shops across the country. In addition to this Tecno has promised to donate a portion of sale from each handset that is sold.

The funds collected will be utilized to solarize the orphanage so that restraints of load shedding don’t hinder the children’s daily school schedule. Moreover the funds will also be used to restock textbook supplies and stationary in the foundation’s orphanages and colleges in Haripur, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, Sargodha, Gilgit and Rawalpindi.

The evening at the Haripur orphanage involved numerous activities to celebrate the partnership. Following a special iftar dinner for more than the 1000 students in attendance, Tecno officials took front row seats to enjoy the performances by the students. Besides a cultural tableau, the students showcased their skills in Taekwondo and sang songs about Pak-China friendship. Tecno officials also gave special gifts to the students from different campuses who achieved academic excellence.

Creek Ma spoke to the children and talked about why education is a cornerstone for a civilized society and how this initiative was aimed to take ownership of the orphans and ensure that they have the chance for a successful life ahead. He also noted that “no child should be left behind” and that this project is just the beginning of Tecno’s commitment to help marginalized children gain a quality education so that they get a fair chance in life. These words were met with a thunderous clap from the students who then went on to hand Mr Creek handmade ‘thank you’ cards.

Through this initiate Tecno is truly paving the way for the most vulnerable of children to transcend with education. The premium mobile brand has shown that it’s goals aren’t just to function as a top tier global market competitor but also as a company that uplifts, improves and invests in the communities in which it operates.
