Former cricketers slam MS Dhoni after India’s World Cup defeat to England

LONDON – MS Dhoni has been slammed by former players after his low-spirited innings in India’s World Cup 2019 defeat to England on Sunday.

The former Indian skipper finished unbeaten on 42 from 31 balls during 31-run defeat England at Edgbaston as India lost their unbeaten tag at this mega event.

When the 37-year-old came to the crease, the run-rate was at almost 11 but it quickly rose to 15 as he appeared content to pick up singles. Dhoni scored four boundaries later in his innings before hitting India’s only six in the penultimate over but it was not nearly enough as Virat Kohli’s side slipped to a defeat, reports Metro.

The result represents a significant blow to Pakistan’s hopes of progressing in the tournament, with England now may reach the semi-finals at their expense if they beat New Zealand on Wednesday.

Pakistan fans took to social media to vent their frustration at Dhoni and now a number of ex-players have criticised the veteran’s approach.

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum told Sky Sports: “It was bizarre. These guys have finished games so many times before and from harder positions. They didn’t really play a shot towards the end. ‘Credit to England, they bowled well and held their nerve. But it was bizarre and an anti-climax. We all expected a tight finish but India’s big finale never came”.

Fellow ex-Kiwi star, Daniel Vettori, added to ESPNcricinfo: “The bowling and fielding was very good. England took the pace off and mixed it up, their game-plans were great. But I also thought Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav didn’t have the right intent. I expecting to see them clearing their front leg and trying to hit sixes every ball but they were just nurdling it around. They had to go all out to try and win the game. It didn’t matter if they lost at that point because it felt like they were going to lose anyway”.

Former India international Murali Karthik, meanwhile, said “At least go down fighting. It was not the case of nurdling it around and getting a not out. You have to try and hit balls rather than nurdle. I am not saying they would have won and you can’t blame them for the loss, but at least go down fighting”.

Virat Kohli defends MS

Virat Kohli has defended MS Dhoni after the India legend received criticism for his performance in the World Cup defeat to England.

He said: “It’s up to the discussions with the two guys in there. MS was trying really hard to get the boundaries. It wasn’t easy because they were bowling really well. When the run-rate got to 14-15 it became tough. We will sit down and assess and try to improve in the next game.”

“No one likes to lose but you have to take it in your stride and understand that the opposition played better on the day. English side was more clinical in the executions of their plans. We have to accept that. The mood is the same – it’s a setback and we have to brush it aside and move forward”.

Plane crash in Texas kills 10 people: officials

WASHINGTON – A small twin-engine passenger plane crashed in Texas in the United States on Sunday, killing 10 people, officials said.

“The Dallas County Medical Examiner has confirmed 10 fatalities and no survivors,” a spokeswoman for the town of Addison told AFP.

The plane was heading for St. Petersburg, Florida and was carrying two flight crew and eight passengers, Vice Chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Bruce Landsberg said.

There were few details on what caused the crash, which the NTSB is investigating, he said.

“There are any number of possibilities that could occur,” Landsberg told a press conference.

Video broadcast by US media showed a massive column of black smoke pouring out of a building at the airport in Addison, as firefighters directed streams of water toward the blaze.

The NTSB investigator in charge of the accident, Jennifer Rodi, said the plane, which had changed ownership recently, hit a private hanger at the airport.

CBS News quoted sources as saying the aircraft lost an engine on takeoff and veered into the hanger.

#MeToo: Aditya Pancholi accused of rape by Bollywood actress

LAHORE- Indian actor Aditya Pancholi was booked for rape on Thursday after a complaint was registered with the Mumbai police by an unnamed Indian cinema star, reported The Hindu.

According to the police, the alleged victim recorded her statement on Thursday afternoon. The allegations range from intoxicating her, raping her and then taking photos of the actress while she was unconscious. Later he used those pictures to blackmail her into submission and extort money from her.

“We have registered an offence of rape, wrongful restraint, assault and criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code,” said Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singh.

“We have recorded a detailed statement from the victim. As the offence occurred several years ago, we will have to visit the locations named by the victim and get in touch with those she has named,” an officer with the Versova police station said.

“Based on her statement, we have also added sections for causing harm by poisonous substance and extortion to the complaint,” an officer said. “We will decide on the further course of action once preliminary inquiries are over.”

According to Pancholi, he is being “falsely implicated in the case.”

“I have all the evidence and video in this case. I am ready to cooperate with the Mumbai police. If they will call me for my statement, then I will cooperate. I am ready for investigation. I knew that a case will be registered against me. I am not going anywhere. The police have not approached me after the FIR was registered,” claimed Pancholi.

Reportedly, the actress said that her and Pancholi were together between 2005 and 2008, during which he physically abused her. She did reach out to the police for help but Pancholi was let off with just a warning.

Previously, Pancholi and his actor-wife Zarina Wahab publicly denied allegations of abuse by the actor. They also filed a defamation suit against the starlet.

The actress is scheduled for a court hearing on July 26th.
