US sanctions Iranian foreign minister

WASHINGTON – The United States (US) has put sanctions on Iran’s top diplomat foreign minister, Mohammed Javad Zarif, the Radio Pakistan reports on Thursday.

The White House announced that the sanctions include freezing of assets of Zarif in the United States or controlled by US entities.

“Zarif implements the reckless agenda of Iran s Supreme Leader and is the regime s primary spokesperson around the world. The United States is sending a clear message to the Iranian regime that its recent behaviour is completely unacceptable,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

Washington will also seek to curtail Zarif’s international travel.

Meanwhile, spokesman for Iranian Foreign Ministry Abbas Mousavi said in a tweet today (Thursday) that the United States has imposed sanctions against Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif because they fear of the logic of his negotiating skills.

He said the US leaders follow irrational and illogical policies and they are well aware that Dr Zarif has influential status in Iran’s policy, but they imposed sanctions against him which demonstrate their ignorance.

‘Gossip Girl’ reboot producers want Leighton Meester, Blake Lively to return

Hey, Upper East Siders! Serena and Blair, aka Manhattan’s elite, might just be returning to the Gossip Girl reboot, reported Elle.

A 10-episode reboot of the popular drama was ordered to series on July 17. It will appear on WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service HBO Max, which is slated to debut in the spring of 2020.

While there are not many details about the new show just yet, it is expected to take place eight years after the events that transpired in the original series. Joshua Safran will return at Gossip Girl’s executive producer, and he will also write the series.

It seems like there is a possibility for Blake and Leighton’s reunion. Executive producer Josh Schwartz recently hinted the possibility of the two actor’s return, during an appearance at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

“We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon [them being involved],” he said. “They played these characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we want to respect that, but obviously…it would be great to see them again.”

Gossip Girl had six seasons on the CW from 2007 to 2012. Its debut kick started the careers of Lively, 31, and Leighton, 33, in addition to fellow costars Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford, Ed Westwick, Taylor Momsen and Jessica Szohr.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Pakistan not guarantor but a facilitator in Afghan peace process, says FM Qureshi

ISLAMABAD – Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan is not a guarantor but only a facilitator in the Afghan peace process, the Radio Pakistan reports on Tuesday.

While talking to the media in Islamabad, the foreign minister said that the entire onus of the Afghan peace process cannot be put on Pakistan.

He said Pakistan maintains that it is the shared responsibility of all the stakeholders to take forward the peace process.

The foreign minister said that Prime Minister Imran Khan wants to have a meeting with the Taliban to woo them for the intra-Afghan dialogue, adding that Pakistan is moving forward in good faith.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi said convergence was seen on Afghan issue during a meeting between Prime Minister Imran Khan and the US President Donald Trump. This has opened a new chapter in Pakistan-US relations, he said.

The minister said that the US visit remained very successful in achieving the objectives and this stands also reflected in the restoration of suspended assistance.

Responding to a question, the Foreign Minister regretted that India is neither ready to hold talks bilaterally with Pakistan on Kashmir dispute nor does it accept the third party mediation.

He said that Kashmir is a disputed territory and any demographic changes in occupied Kashmir will not be acceptable to Pakistan as well as Kashmiri people.

Multiple victims as shooter opens fire at US food festival

LOS ANGLES – A shooter opened fire at a major food festival in California on Sunday, police said, with US media reporting at least three people killed and multiple others wounded.

Police in Gilroy said it was “still an active crime scene” at the site of the city’s garlic festival, 30 miles (48 kilometres) southeast of San Jose, one of the largest food festivals in the country.

Footage on NBC showed people running as shots rang out. A witness named Julissa Contreras told NBC a white man in his 30s armed with a rifle opened fire indiscriminately.

“I could see him shooting in just every direction. He wasn’t aiming at anyone specifically. It was just left to right, right to left,” Contreras said, according to NBC.

“He definitely was prepared for what he was doing,” she said.

City councilman Dion Bracco said at least three people had died according to various US media outlets including the New York Times.

One suspect was in custody, he said, according to the newspaper.

“They don’t know if there were more, so they have to treat it as an active situation,” he said.

Police did not immediately confirm the casualty numbers or any arrest.

“Law Enforcement is at the scene of shootings in Gilroy, California. Reports are that shooter has not yet been apprehended,” US President Donald Trump earlier tweeted.

The San Francisco division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said on Twitter that it was “responding to the scene of a reported shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California.”

China flag flies at half-mast for Tiananmen crackdown leader

BEIJING – The Chinese flag was flown at half-mast at Tiananmen Square on Monday in honour of late former premier Li Peng, a hardliner in the crackdown on protesters who occupied the Beijing landmark in 1989.

Li, who died of an unspecified illness at age 90 last week, was reviled by activists as the “Butcher of Beijing” for his role in the military’s brutal suppression of pro-democracy demonstrations on June 4, 1989.

But he was eulogised in state media following his death as a “tested and loyal communist soldier” who “took decisive measures to stop the turmoil” 30 years ago.

At Tiananmen on Monday, soldiers at the daily flag-raising ceremony raised the red banner to half-mast as hundreds of tourists looked on under rainy skies in the capital.

“He was a man of strong will,” said a man visiting from central Shaanxi province. The Chinese national flag was also flown at half-mast in Hong Kong, where large gatherings are held every year in memory of the victims of the 1989 crackdown.

The former British colony has been rocked for two months by increasingly violent protests that have directly challenged Beijing’s authority over the global financial hub.

The official Xinhua news agency said Li’s body would be cremated in Beijing on Monday. The flag will also fly at half-mast at the imposing Great Hall of the People next to the square, as well as other government buildings, airports and Chinese embassies.
