HBL PSL7: Aakash Chopra unimpressed with Babar Azam

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra was left unimpressed with Babar Azam’s innings in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) season seven opener between Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans.

The Kings’ captain, Azam, scored 23 runs in 29 balls and was far from his best while batting.

The renowned commentator, Chopra, believed that “Babar’s shadow arrived in Karachi today”.

Kings lost the match by seven wickets after failing to defend a modest target of 125 runs.

Sultans’ captain Mohammad Rizwan led from the front with an unbeaten fifty to take his side over the line. He scored 52 runs in 47 balls.

“We didn’t utilise middle-overs well and were short on runs which is why we lost. We were lacking experience with our main bowlers [Imad and Amir] not available. I feel happy with the way Rizwan is performing,” said Babar in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Karachi’s next match is against Quetta Gladiators on January 29, meanwhile Sultans will face Lahore Qalandars on the same day.

Shops forced closed by unidentified men reopen in Karachi

Shops in several Karachi areas were forcibly closed by unidentified men but later reopened after intervention from police and Rangers.

According to reports, shops at the Burns Road food street were closed after men came out on streets. However, the shops were reopened after police arrived in the streets and assured shop owners of security.

Similar situation was reported at markets in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.

In Korangi 2 1/2, unidentified men blocked roads and burnt tyres near Chiniot Hospital.

District Korangi SSP Shahjahan Khan told SAMAA Digital that men on motorbikes forced people to close shops and businesses. However, police has assured shop owners of security and markets in the area have reopened.

District East SSP Qamar Raza Jiskani also said that some unidentified men tried to close businesses in Gulshan-e-Iqbal but police foiled their bid.

It is not clear if the incidents were related to an Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) call to observe a black day on Thursday.

Several MQMP workers were injured after police fired tear gas to disperse protesters who were staging a sit in outside Chief Minister House.

MQM-P was protesting against Sindh Local Government Act passed by the Sindh Assembly in December. They took out a rally and staged a sit-in in front of the CM House.

More than 15 people were injured, including policemen, in the clashes and several were arrested.

According to district South SSP, all arrested MQM-P workers have been released upon the directions of Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah.

Twevle injured were moved to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and three to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical College (JPMC).

JPMC Emergency Incharge Dr Saima told SAMAA Digital that three injured MQM-P workers were brought to the hospital including MPA Sadaqat Abbasi who was earlier detaijed by the police. Videos showed police dragging Abbasi and forcing him into a police van.

Dr Saima added that all injured were in stable condition.

One policeman was also brought to the hospital according Dr Syed.

MQMP announced that it would observe a black day at a press conference.

MQM-P coordination committee has also called an emergency meeting at party’s Bahadurabad office. Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui will preside over the meeting to chart out a future course of action.

E-commerce guarantees home delivery of weapons across Pakistan

Think about things you can get delivered at home after ordering online and certainly weapons wouldn’t be one of them.

But this is not the case. Getting a revolver delivered to your home is as easy as ordering a pizza. A person can choose their preferred weapon on social media, make a phone call to the dealer, agree upon a price and a few days later, courier will knock on their door.

From Karachi to Kashmir, this delivery service is available across Pakistan.

One might think that this network might be operating in shadow or under several layers of secrecy. But, in this case, there are Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups to sift through a catalogue of weapons.

A citizen who got weapon delivered to his home told SAMAA TV that his weapon was shipped from Dara Adamkhel in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Karachi. It cost him Rs38,000.

The person, who wished to remain anonymous, said that he was not asked for a license before the delivery. The entire dealing was done over phone.

“I sent Rs10,000 as advance through Easy Paisa and the remaining amount of Rs28,000 was paid after checking the weapon,” he said.

The cheapest delivery is in Karachi. There are two separate networks: the first is weapons dealer, the second is those who deliver it.

There is no limit on the type of weapons being sold and delivered. From a 9mm pistol to an AK47, everything is on sale.

Saudi cabinet approves prisoner exchange agreement with Pakistan

The Saudi Arabia cabinet has approved the draft of A prisoner exchange agreement with Pakistan, state media reported on Tuesday.

Under the agreement, convicted prisoners will be transferred between the two countries, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

The cabinet also approved draft agreements for cooperation against crimes and a document to finalize the memorandum of understanding with Pakistan on illicit anti-human trafficking and drugs.

The meeting was chaired by King Salman bin Abdul Aziz, the SPA said.

In May 2021, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfi Bukhari announced that the two countries have signed a prisoner transfer agreement to repatriate over 2,000 prisoners to Pakistan.

An MOU in this regard was signed in 2019 when the Saudi Arabia Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman visited Pakistan.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman on his visit had announced that over 2,000 Pakistani prisoners would be “released.”

Saudi ministers met in person for the first time in two years.

Meanwhile, Saudi Passport authorities have extended the validity of residency permits (Iqama) and exit and re-entry visas without charges until March 31, 2022, according to Arab News.

The extension, issued by the Minister of Finance, is part of the Kingdom’s efforts to address the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the newspaper said.

JI warns of blocking entry points to Karachi

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has issued a two-day ultimatum to the Sindh government, saying that if its demands were not met, the party would block five entry points into Karachi.

The ultimatum was issued by JI Karachi Chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman addressing a sit-in outside the Sindh Assembly on Sunday night.

The JI activists have been staging a sit-in for the past 24 days against the local government act passed by the Sindh Assembly. On Sunday, JI Chief Sirajul Haq addressed the gathering.

Sirajul Haq warned the Sindh government that a protracted battle over the issue would damage the Pakistan Peoples Party.

He said that there was a possibility that when Bilawal Bhutto Zardari begins his long march on Islamabad on February 27, people from Sindh may march on Bilawal House in Karachi.

Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman said when the JI begins its sit-ins at the entry points to Karachi, it will not allow any vehicles, except ambulances, to pass through the road.

He also take a dig at the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Grand Democratic Alliance, who on January 15 had announced that if the local bodies act was not withdrawn in one week, they would shut down major cities in the Sindh province.

“Where are those who gave one week ultimatum. They should have been staging a sit-in at the Bilawal House today,” Rehman said.
